Sri la sri Somasundara Gnana desikar  of  Karaikudi bacame the eighth head of the mutt. He was  solely in charge  of the  mutts at Chidambaram, Erumbur, Thirukkalar, Porulvaithaseri and  Manamadurai.  He  contributed so liberally to the Sringeri Mutt that ,once the head of the Sringeri mutt  asked him  why he spent much for the Sringeri mutt out of the funds  of the Koviloor mutt and whether it was not necessary to look after his mutt (Koviloor mutt).
