HISTORY OF KOVILOOR MADALAYAM
Sri la Sri Veerasekara Gnanadesikar called Thirukkalar Andavar who became the fifth head of the mutt did renovation in the temple of Parijathavaneswarar and Amirthavalli at Thirukkalar near Mannargudi in Thanjavur district. He also established Vedanta mutt, constructed a granary, a Pasumadam and created a Nandavanam (flower garden).
In 1908 he celebrated the consecration of Kotravaleeswarar and Thirunellai Amman temple in the presence of his holiness Sri Satchidananda Siva Abinaya Narasimma Bharathi of Sringeri mutt.
He had the Saradhambal temple constructed at Sringeri, using granite and Koviloor mutt met the entire expenditure. We can find similarity in the appearance and structure of the temple of Saradhambal and that of Thirunellaiyamman. He made five temple cars for the Panchamoorthis at Thirukkalar. He had a title called Rajarishi. There was a close connection between the Sringeri Peedam and the Koviloor mutt, in his regime.
The Mahamandapam in front of Thirunellaiyamman Sannadhi is known for its exqusite and wondrous sculpture and craftsmanship. We can find beautiful sculpture carved out of a single piece of stone. On one pillar Sri Saradha Devi appears as a decorated angel; on the other Karaikkal Ammayar stands near the feet of Urthavathandavaraja; yet on the other we find the sculpture of Goddess Meenakshi's wedding, depicting Brahmma with his folded hands and beating the drum. We also find a sculpture of Srimath Andavar prostrating before Ambal signifying the importance of complete surrender to God. We infer from this sculpture that devotion is more important than salvation and through sincere devotion one can attain salvation.
Till the fourth descendant there was a habit among the heads of the mutt, to wear a piece of white cloth from hip to knee and a single bead (Rutraksha) tied in a white ribbon around the neck. Sri Thirukkalar Andavar, the fifth head of the mutt wore saffron following the custom of Sringeri Guru Peedam. Till today this tradition is followed by the heads of the Koviloor mutt. What he uttered became true and all held him in high esteem on account of his divine power of word. The Koviloor mutt was extended to Thiruvannamalai, Porulvaithaseri, Thirukkalar, Chidambaram and Thiruppuvanam and its branches were established at Valavanoor, Mettupalayam, Erumpur, Madurai and at Kariyanoor called as Thatthuvaraya Swamigal mutt, His regime is the golden era of the Koviloor mutt. Kanchi Sri Paramachariar wrote in the journalKalki, praising him as the reincarnation of the St.Thurvasar.
